Top 8 contestants, pt1

I think most people would agree that the 2008 season of American Idol has potentially been the most hotly contested of all 7 series so far, with an abundance of singing and alround performing talent on show.

The final 8 contestants in the show exemplify this, and we will be running through each of them over the course of these two posts. All eight discussed here are all in with a good chance of becoming the American Idol winner this year - but who do you think will make it to the top?

Starting with the girls:

Kristy Lee Cook

Kristy has put in a couple of very strong performances, which have helped get her through to this stage of the competition. The blonde singer certainly has the looks of a star, and can really perform but the point has to be made that vocally she just isn't as strong as some of the other contenders that are left. Still, we hope Ms. Lee Cook stays around for a while - she's kept a smile on our faces.

Brooke White

Brooke is another contestant who has made it through on the back of some quality performances, rather than having been consistently excellent all of the way through. 'Let it Be' was potentially her finest, and she'll be in with her best shot of winning if she sticks to this kind of song. If she is let down anywhere, then it's in her performances - let's just say Brooke is not the most natural mover when on stage.

Syesha Marcado

Probably one of the top two women left on the show, Syesha pulled off a great performance in Dolly Parton week, singing a very difficult song very well. She has been consistently good throughout the show, and seems to have made a fan of Simon Cowell. Which can never hurt...

Carly Smithson

Perhaps the pre-season hype about Carly, where she was embroiled in controversy over the fact that she has already had (and lost) a recording contract, has helped her stay in the competition. However, I think it's most likely down to the fact that she is the strongest female vocalist in the competition, and has the best chance of winning it for the girls.

Check out part 2 of this post for our run down of the final 4 boys.

San Diego Auditions, Pt2

20 year old Samantha Musa has to be the first person ever to get four ‘Yes’ votes during her audition! Bizarrely she and her sister are obsessed with Simon Cowell, and her sister got invited in to judge with the usual panel. Luckily, the weirdness appears to end there, because Samantha went on to complete an audition described by Randy as “Excellent” and Simon as “Great”. One to watch, we think!

16 year old David Archuleta is someone else with a sob-story - one of his vocal chords was paralyzed a couple of year’s ago. Not that you could tell by his audition, which was so good he even got Randy singing along - and giving him a “100 million percent Yes”.

Carly Smithson got her second (third, fourth… whatever) chance singing ‘I’m Every Woman’, and this time making sure she had her paper-work in order went she got through to the Hollywood stages by getting married!
