The veiwing figures are in for the opening two shows in the 2008 season of American Idol, and there’s good news and bad news for Messrs. Lythgoe, Cowell et al. While the show was comfortably the most watched show on television on each night in the United States, fewer people tuned in this year than watched the same show last year.
Over 30 million of us tuned in for the Dallas Auditions on Wednesday night, which is nearly twenty million viewers more than the next watched TV show, Deal or No Deal on NBC! It also did incredibly well in pulling in the ‘profitable’ viewing segment of 18-49 year-olds.
However, this time last year, the show had almost 37 million people watching, which is 6.66 million more viewers (scary number or what?!). So does this mean that American Idol is on it’s way out? Are less people interested in watching this, now that we’ve seen essentially the same thing happen 6 times in a row already?
